PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

Specific program outcomes are listed below. The Bachelor of Science in Special Education (K-12) program graduates will have:
  • Develop specialized pedagogical knowledge to understand the unique needs and characteristics of students with diverse learning needs.
  • Prepare students to meet state requirements and earn an Arkansas teaching license in Special Education (K-12).
  • Learn and apply research-supported strategies in instructional planning, intervention, and classroom management for students with disabilities.
  • Equip graduates with approaches to deliver culturally appropriate learning opportunities that respect and reflect student diversity.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  1. An ability to develop and implement learning experiences tailored to a range of special education learners.
  2. An ability to use research-supported methods when planning and delivering instruction to promote student learning outcomes.
  3. An ability to integrate culturally responsive practices into educational planning and classroom instruction.
  4. An ability to understand how different disabilities and learning needs impact student performance and instruction.
  5. An ability to work effectively with families, educators, and related professionals to support students and their educational plans.
First Year Making Connections Course
    • UC 1013 – Making Connections
      Semester Hours: 3 (or equivalent course)
General Education Courses

Students with this major must take the following:

    • MATH 1023 – College Algebra Semester Hours: 3 or MATH course that requires MATH 1023 as a prerequisite
    • COMS 1203 – Oral Communication Semester Hours: 3 (Required Departmental Gen. Ed. Option)
    • ENG 1003 – Composition 1 Semester Hours: 3
    • ENG 1013 – Composition II Semester Hours: 3

    • ELSE 3223 – Introduction to Teaching Special Education Semester Hours: 3
    • ELSE 3243 – Special Education Due Process Semester Hours: 3
    • ELSE 3643 – The Exceptional Student in the Regular Classroom Semester Hours: 3
    • ELSE 4103 – Methods & Materials for Students with Severe or Profound Disabilities Semester Hours: 3
    • ELSE 4223 – Reading & Language Arts for Exceptional Learners Semester Hours: 3
    • ELSE 4123 – Introduction to Autism Spectrum Disorders Semester Hours: 3
    • ELSE 4143 – Curriculum Programming for Exceptional Learners Semester Hours: 3
    • ELSE 4153 – Assessment & Diagnosis of Exceptional Learners Semester Hours: 3
    • ELSE 4163 – Introduction to Emotional Behavior Disorders Semester Hours: 3
    • ELSE 4193 – Special Education Law & Procedures Semester Hours: 3
    • ELSE 4203 – Family & Community Systems Semester Hours: 3
    • ELSE 4283 – Classroom Management Semester Hours: 3
    • ELSE 4273 – Effective Transition for Students with Disabilities Semester Hours: 3
    • ELSE 4263 – Positive Behaviors Invention Support Semester Hours: 3
